On most coasts, a change between high and low water takes place about every 6 hours.
The tidal rhythm has to do mainly with the gravitational forces of the moon. Unlike a solar day, a lunar day takes about 24 hours and 50 minutes. So the earth needs an extra 50 minutes to "catch up" with the moon. This clock is designed so that its hand circles the dial every 12 hours and 25 minutes (twice per lunar day). This is how long a tide takes, i.e. the period of time between two phases of high or low water. The tide clock shows the highest water level (high tide) at "12 noon" and the lowest water level (low tide) at "6 o'clock". In between, the remaining hours (5, 4, 3, 2, 1) are given up to the ebb or flood.
